Construction of the cemetery began in 1817 and the first chapel was built between 1819 and 1840. The building began operating as a cemetery in 1855. In 1874 a new chapel was built, designed by Josep Simó i Fontcuberta, to replace the previous one which was in ruins.
In 1879 the engineer Francesc Lluch i Rafecas led the construction of the niches and mausoleums. The entrance gate, by Bonaventura Pollés i Vivó, is from 1913. The neutral area for non-Catholics is also by this architect. Between 1961 and 1975 new niches and the public restrooms were built. In 1982 a new expansion was carried out.
